The number of migrants in Europe is growing: Most Syrians and Afghans enter the EU illegally through the Western Balkans

The number of migrants entering the EU illegally through the Western Balkans has almost doubled this year, said the European Border Guard Agency (Frontex). According to them, most of the people are Syrians and Afghans, and third are Moroccans.

Frontex data show that from January to July, 22,600 migrants who entered the EU illegally from the Western Balkans route were detected, which is 90% more than the same period last year.

Last month, 3,600 illegal crossings at the EU border were detected on the Western Balkans route, 67% more than in July 2020.

According to Frontex, the pressure of migrants continues to grow on the eastern borders of the EU, where more than 3 thousand illegal crossings of migrants from Belarus were registered on the border with Lithuania.

The Central Mediterranean route had the largest share of illegal crossings in July, followed by the Western Balkans route.

Most people on that route are from Tunisia, Bangladesh and Egypt.

According to Frontex, the number of illegal migrants should decrease in the future.
